A clinically grounded music therapy service

Clinical music therapy supports individuals experiencing complex needs affecting communication, emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement with others.

It offers a structured, non-verbal therapeutic pathway for individuals who may not be able to access or sustain purely verbal interventions. Through shared musical interaction, it becomes possible to develop regulation, expression and connection in ways that are not always available through conventional approaches.

Increasingly, the practice supports individuals adjusting to life after brain injury and other complex neurological presentations, with particular focus on emotional regulation and identity reconstruction within community rehabilitation contexts.

Sessions take place across education, care and specialist settings, and are adapted to the individual’s needs, environment and wider support network.

Clinical services and areas of work

Clinical focus of the work

The work focuses on supporting emotional regulation, communication, relational safety, and psychological stability for individuals with complex needs, particularly where verbal approaches are limited or insufficient. Through structured musical interaction within a consistent therapeutic frame, individuals are supported to explore expression, regulation and connection in ways that feel contained and meaningful.

The work is particularly relevant where difficulties are experienced around emotional regulation, communication, relationships or psychological safety, and where traditional talking approaches may not be appropriate or effective.

Clinical focus areas include:

  • Autism and neurodevelopmental difference

  • Learning disabilities

  • Trauma and attachment-related difficulties

  • Emotional regulation and containment

  • Non-verbal or minimally verbal communication

  • Acquired brain injury and rehabilitation

Working within organisations and multidisciplinary teams

Support is delivered within the context of existing systems and services, with careful attention to professional boundaries, communication and responsibility. Work is designed to complement — not duplicate — the support already in place, and to integrate thoughtfully alongside educational, clinical or care provision.

Where appropriate, music therapy contributes to multidisciplinary thinking and care planning, supporting teams to reflect on emotional, relational and behavioural processes. The work is held within clear clinical frameworks and informed by regular supervision and professional accountability.

Provision may be commissioned on an ongoing or time-limited basis, depending on the needs of the setting, and is shaped in discussion with the organisation to ensure it is appropriate, contained and sustainable.
